TDtv™ is a 3GPP multimedia broadcast and multicast service (MBMS) solution that provides UMTS mobile operators the most cost-effective way to deliver high-quality television, video, and audio content to customers on a fully-mobile basis.
Unlike other MBMS solutions, TDtv enables UMTS operators to meet the growing demand for mobile TV services without the need for additional spectrum and without having to use any portion of their existing FDD spectrum. This is because TDtv is the only MBMS solution specifically designed to utilize a UMTS operator’s existing and often underutilized TDD frequencies.
Fully compliant with the UMTS MBMS standard, TDtv infrastructure can be easily integrated into a WCDMA network, and by employing cutting-edge macro-site-combining and receive diversity technologies in the user device, TDtv can provide full network coverage even when deployed on a fraction of the sites that comprise a WCDMA network. TDtv's exceptional performance was recently validated in a trial by some of Europe's largest operators, including Orange, Vodafone, Telefonica, and 3UK.
The TDtv mobile broadcast system is comprised of the following elements:
TDtv Base Station
The modular TDtv base station consists of a digital shelf and a separate radio shelf. The digital shelf consists of a control card and a sector card which controls three sectors. The single radio shelf can support up to three sectors of two 5 MHz carriers. To reduce RF cable loss, the radio shelf can be located close to the antenna and up to 500 meters away from the digital shelf by using a CPRI fiber interface. Sector cards and radio shelves are field replaceable.
TDtv INC
The TDtv INC processes the TDtv streams and supplies them to the TDtv transmitters for transmission over the air. Up to 28 300 kbps TV channels can be configured in two 5MHz channels. Broadcast channels are user definable to accommodate different throughput requirements from radio channels to high quality TV at 512 kbps.
Dual Mode WCDMA/TDtv Handsets
Designed for easy integration into WCDMA handsets, our low-cost TDtv system-on-a-chip integrates an advanced TD-CDMA baseband processing core (BBP3) with two ARC processors to provide all of the digital functionality required by a handset or standalone modem. Supporting functions include internal and external memory controllers and interfaces, flexible clocking scheme support, dual LVDS radio interfaces, and multiple standard interfaces for system control and host integration.
